Effects of too much vitamin b 12

The effects of too much vitamin B 12 are nothing too extraordinary as this vitamin seems to have a very low potential for toxicity. What does this mean? It means that it is not that easy to get toxic effects form this vitamin, however, it also means that you should not go crazy and start taking huge does of it either :-).

It seems to be agreed upon that one of the more obvious reasons for this is because vitamin B 12 happens to be a water soluble vitamin. Being a water soluble vitamin means that your body can easily excrete any excess levels of this vitamin in you urine.

The medical institute of health states that "no adverse effects have been associated with excess vitamin B12 intake from food and supplements in healthy individuals" However, what is advised is that you should try to take a folic acid supplement with this vitamin. The reason for this is that a high intake on one can actually mask a deficiency of the other.

There is one possible caution where by you might not want to take too much vitamin B 12, and that is because there is a chance that excess levels of vitamin B 12 could deplete iron if it is not supplemented.

Another interesting fact to know is that this vitamin is the only B vitamin in which the body stores in substantial amounts. Not only that; for the body to absorb this vitamin, it has to first separate the vitamin from the protein in food. This is a very complicated process for the separation to actually take place. Because of this, for some individuals, as they get older, find themselves becoming deficient in this nutrient. Experts believe that up to 20% of older adults are deficient in Vitamin b 12.

Vitamin B 12 is one of those vitamins which seem to have more benefits that negative out-comes. It is for this reason that one should be more concerned as to what might happen if you get too little of this valuable nutrient.
