Fruit with the most vitamin c
If you are looking for fruit with the most vitamin C, then you have come to the right place for the answer. Believe me, this is one powerful fruit!
Ladies and gentlemen! Introducing the one and only...Camu-camu!
Yeah well, ok, so you all thought it was the kiwi right. Bet some of you still think it is the orange. Don't blame you. With the amount of advertising done on citrus, who wouldn't think so ;-).
The Camu-camu is a shrub that is found in all parts of the Amazon rainforest. This fruit's favourite place of breading is in swampy areas. This low-growing shrub grows to a height of 2-3 meters, and is covered with feathery leaves. Camu-camu, which is the fruit that this shrub produces, is light, round, and a light color of orange. It average size is usually that of a lemon.
Because of this fruit's very sour and acidic taste, it was never commonly eaten as a fruit by the indigenous people. Now days however, this fruit has really become quite popular and is now made into ice creams and cold drinks in Iquitos and Peru. At this point in time, Camu-camu is recorded as having the highest amount of vitamin C on planet Earth. Bet you are looking for a comparison right? Well then, if you insist :-)
As you might have known, oranges have 500-4,000 ppm vitamin C. Acerola, which is probably comes in at second place as having the highest vitamin C, provides 16,000 to 172,000 ppm. Now comes the big boy; Camu-camu provides an amazing, spectacular, and last but not least, unbelievable 500,000 ppm. My fellow healthy people, this is a whopping 2 grams of vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit. Still not getting it? How about this; Camu-camu has 30 times more vitamin C than your humble orange!
Yes, now I can feel the excitement.
There is only one little problem. Camu-camu is not so common and virtually impossible to find in your neighbourhood supermarket. So for now we are just going to have to be content with the ...Orange, and Kiwi, which by the way, has 4 times more vitamin c than the orange. Looks like the orange is beginning to look more pathetic by the hour :-). Don't matter! They still come out tops on taste!
