How much vitamin a is too much?

How much vitamin A is too much? This is a very important question. Why? Because by getting too much of this vitamin, one could see some very dangerous side effects.

One thing however that is important to understand is that it is very difficult to get too much of vitamin A through natural foods. it is found that most cases of getting an over dose of vitamin A has been the result of vitamin A supplements, or so called "performed" vitamin A.


Before we continue, let us take a look at what the RDA is for men and women;

The RDA is for men are 5,000 IU daily.
The RDA is for women are 4,000 IU daily.

So, what can too much vitamin A do to you? Well, if you exceed 25 000 IUs a day for a range of three months, there is a very high risk of skin and liver damage. If a child takes more than 5000 IUs a day, there is a great possibly that he or she may get bone damage, hair loss, headaches, double vision and vomiting. You can usually spot the first signs of vitamin A over dosages by noticing that a person developing dry lips. This is then followed by the drying of nasal mucous and eyes.

It is therefore important that before buying any type of vitamin A supplement, or multivitamin supplement, that you read how much vitamin A is contained in each tablet. This is especially important if you intend to give these supplements to your child.
