Research on orange juice and vitamin C has shown some very important results. Let's face it; there is nothing better than an ice cold cup of orange juice! The taste alone can have you begging for more. However, before you get too comfortable with this tantalizing idea, take note of the following findings recently discovered, and discover which methods are more beneficial for you when trying to get the highest intake of vitamin C from your orange juice :-)
 
Orange juice can be consumed in many different ways. Some of these ways would include frozen concentrate, canned orange juice, bottled orange juice, freshly squeezed, etc.
 
What is important to know is that not all orange juices are equal, and that vitamin C has a way of not wanting to remain in the juice for long periods with out getting bored :-).
 
Frozen orange juice has around 78% for vitamin C, while canned orange juice on has 69%. The reason for this is that vitamin C is destroyed when going through the condensing process. In the end, freshly squeezed orange juice is the best method of getting the highest intake of this vitamin.
 
Vitamin C will be totally lost in foods if they are frozen for more than two months. In order to minimize the loss of this vitamin, it is recommended to keep your freezer between 0-10 degrees.
 
Other ways in which vitamin C is gradually destroyed is when it comes into contact with oxygen. What this means is that the longer the orange juice sits in contact with air, the more Vitamin C is lost. Another way of measuring the loss of this vitamin is by the taste of the juice. The less the taste, the less vitamin C.
 
Whenever you decide to by Ready to drink orange juice, make sure to purchase it as least 3 - 4 weeks from the expiration date. Once purchased, try to consume it within 1 week of opening.
 
With all this in mind though, don't panic :-) Remember that the recommended dietary allowances for vitamin C are between 60 - 90 milligrams. Whether you drink fresh, canned, frozen or bottled orange juice, all will provide you with more than the RDA just by drinking 2/3 cup of all the mentioned ways of consuming it ;-)
